What is Lignite Coal?

The high moisture content (ranging from 20% to 40%) makes lignite less energy-efficient compared to other types of coal like bituminous or anthracite.



Formation of Lignite Coal 

Lignite forms over millions of years from the compression of peat layers, which are rich in plant material. This process, known as coalification, involves the gradual buildup of heat and pressure, transforming the organic material into a denser, carbon-rich substance. Unlike higher grades of coal, lignite has not been subjected to intense heat or pressure, which is why it retains more moisture and has a lower carbon content.

Carbon Content: Lignite has a lower carbon content (25-35%) compared to other types of coal. This lower carbon content means it produces less heat when burned. 

Volatile Matter: Lignite has a high percentage of volatile matter, which contributes to its ease of ignition.



Uses of Lignite Coal 

Despite its lower energy content, lignite coal is used extensively for electricity generation, particularly in areas where higher-grade coals are not economically viable. Here are some common uses: 


Electricity Generation
